Preliminary Research Report

I decided to do my discourse on myself… student discourse. I think this is going to be easy. Well I mean I shouldn’t say easy because it’s going to be a lot of work but I think as far as the information, I know what I have to work on.  The reason why I chose to do it on a student is because the information is going to come from experience. But its not going to be just me, its going to include information from other students and other sources. Students go through a lot of tough times in school. Whether its middle school, high school, or collage, all schools can be stressful. But in the same time, great memories can be made from the experience. Other ways to avoid stress and frustration can be thought of to improve oneself in school or the idea can be given to someone that is going through experience.  There is more to it than just stress. Its anxiety, tension build up, even holiday stress. All this can be controlled by having a time management plan for the student. Sometimes it gets to a point where chronic stress starts to happen. Then there are those mid semester blues where you try to cope with the stress of being a graduate student if you are one. Sleep plays a big role when it comes to stress. The less you sleep, the more stressful your day will be. For example, Getting 6 hours of less can put you into what’s called a sleep deficit, or lack of sufficient sleep. Having a sleep deficiency can actually make you less sharp mentally, which can negatively affect your performance on tests, even if you spent those missed hours of sleep studying. So it’s very important for you to get all of your studying done so you can get a good night of sleep before your big day. Trying to visualize success can also help you. A great way to build your confidence as you fall asleep each night is to visualize yourself taking the tests and doing wonderfully. Detailed visualizations can help you feel like you’re really experiencing something, and visualizing yourself doing well is a way to ‘practice’ success in a way that can actually help you perform better. Being confident as you take your exams can keep you from choking because of the stress. Visualizations can also help you to remember facts: you can create detailed scenarios that involve the information you’re trying to remember, and this can help cement the facts in your memory. Staying calm is also a good way to reduce stress and tension. The calmer you are, the less worrying you will encounter, and the less stressful your time is going to be in class. There are a lot of ways to clear tension. You can do breathing exercises, you can meditate, some listen to music, others write in their diaries. Whatever it takes to release tension, a student will be more than glad to do it.

Harry Potter

So i went and saw the new Harry Potter movie with some friends. it was actaully really good considering that i didnt read any of the books yet and i have the first 4, weird huh. everyone was going crazy about the movie. I was actaully surprised that i didnt see anyone with like costumes or like wizerd hats or something. i read a little bit of the first book but i just didnt find it interesting. i guess im just picky when its comes to books. actually i am picky to be honest with you. I like readying Tom Clancy books because they’re full or mystery and they make you think about whats going to happen next and so you would want to read more and more. i read Splinter Cell by Tom Clancy and i loved it. the book had almost 500 pages and i finished it in about 4 days. some can read it in a day but for someone who doesnt read books that much, 4 days is pretty good i think. then i went out and bought the 2nd part of the book called Splinter Cell Operation Barricuda. That book was also awsome. It really makes you think about our own government and if they really do have stuff like that. Some people like it, and some are freaked out by it but it all depends on the individual. i also read something that interested me alot on CNN.com. they had an artical about NASA wanting to build an elevator to the moon. now, im not a rocket scientist but i dont even think thats possible. but then again anything is possible if you got the resources and alot of time. it made me wonder about how it was going to be built and what material was going to be used. think about it, if a comet or an astroid flew through space, i would want the material it withstand that rock if i was going to be in that elevator. i persoanlly dont think its worth the time and money. i think there are better things to waste money on. Another artical that i read about NASA is that they want to build a space toilet….how interesting…and pricey….$19 million. it suppose to recycle everything or something like that. i know it sounds gross but thats what the artical said. personally i dont think we really need a toilet floating in space. its pointless and waste of money. space shuttles have restrooms so why the need for a space toilet. no astranaut is going to walk out of the shuttle, fly to the toilet and do this business… unless they’re planning on putting it somewhere which i  still think is stupid. i have a better idea. how about taking all that money thats being spent on stupid things, and put it towards feeding the all the hungry kids out there that are dying of diseases and starvation. 19 million can go a long way for those purposes.

Assignment 2 ORIGINAL

Lord, hear my prayer; let my cry come to you.

Do not hide your face from me now that I am in distress.

Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly.

For my days vanish like smoke; my bones burn away as in a furnace.

I am withered, dried up like grass, too wasted to eat my food.

From my loud groaning I become just skin and bones.

I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins.

I lie awake and moan, like a lone sparrow on the roof.

All day long my enemies taunt me; in their rage, they make my name a curse.

I eat ashes like bread, mingle my drink with tears.

Because of your furious wrath, you lifted me up just to cast me down.

My days are like a lengthening shadow; I wither like the grass.

But you, Lord, are enthroned forever; your renown is for all generations.

You will again show mercy to Zion; now is the time for pity; the appointed time has come.

Its stones are dear to your servants; its dust moves them to pity.

The nations shall revere your name, Lord, all the kings of the earth, your glory, once the Lord has rebuilt Zion and appeared in glory, heeding the plea of the lowly, not scorning their prayer.

Let this be written for the next generation, for a people not yet born, that they may praise the Lord: “The Lord looked down from the holy heights, viewed the earth from heaven, to attend to the groaning of the prisoners, to release those doomed to die.

Then the Lord’s name will be declared on Zion, the praise of God in Jerusalem, when all peoples and kingdoms gather to worship the Lord.

God has shattered my strength in mid-course, has cut short my days.

I plead, O my God, do not take me in the midst of my days.

Your years last through all generations.

Of old you laid the earth’s foundations; the heavens are the work of your hands.

They perish, but you remain; they all wear out like a garment; like clothing you change them and they are changed, but you are the same, your years have no end.

May the children of your servants live on; may their descendants live in your presence.

Celebrities Vs. Law

When multi-millionaire party girl Paris Hilton was charged with breaking her probation and sentenced to jail, it was a small victory for all us regular people who obey the laws and pay hard if we don’t. Finally a seemingly untouchable celebrity was paying for their crimes, which in Paris’ case included drink driving, alcohol-related reckless driving, and driving with a suspended licence. I think it’s very stupid and ridiculous that celebrities get away with so much crap. They’re humans too. What pissed me off was the she was released after only four days but with house arrest. Even then she still gets away. They decided to throw her back in jail for 23 days, but she came up with an excuse like a medical condition. God forbid its a little cold and God forbid you’re not sleeping on your silk and Egyptian cotton sheets. They also decided to give her a 4,000 square foot area or wonder around in. she also gets people from different fashion stores to bring her the latest fashion in clothing and other things. If you’re going to jail for doing something stupid that’s going to potentially affect people around you like drinking and driving then you deserve to do time and not screw around. I don’t think its right that she gets to bend the law just because she’s famous and a millionaire. This tells me that our government can’t handle those who have money and fame. Everyone should serve time like they should and not be able to bend the laws or else why have a law in the first place. Its there for these kinds of reasons so people can be straightened out. Paris said she’s going to be a different woman once its all over……HA, like im going to believe that one. Once you’re a screw up, you’re a screw up for good.

Pell & Queneau

So I read the story entries and the two the looked fairly similar were the stories by Raymand Queneau and Derek Pell. One talked about Transformations (Queneau) and the other talked about The Revolver. The first one I looked at was by Queneau. He explains how one paragraph or writing can be turned into something else but using the same information provided for you. Used examples of Notation, Double Entry, Precision, Narrative, Passive, Haiku which is used in
Japan, and Zoological. Couple of examples that I liked were Precision, and Zoological. Precision used precise numbers for distances and time. For example, he talked about the bus of the S-line which measures 10 meters long, 3 meter wide, and 6 meters high. This formation also talks about how many people fit in the bus, what time the bus was loaded, and the weight of some individuals on the bus. This is pretty much being precise about something if you want to go into deep detail which not a lot of stories do. I like detail but it depends on what im reading. If I was reading a car magazine I would like to know detailed information about the engine how it performs. Then there is Zoological. This turns the individual into an animal and looks at the other individuals from an animal’s point of view. Keep in mind that all the other individuals are animals. One example that Queneau used is how he was talking about how he was in a bird cage and it was feeding time, he noticed a young puppy with a neck like a giraffe and then expressed his visual looks (like the toad, ugly and venomous). In other formations of text, like the Notation, it’s talked about the individual wearing a hat and mentioning the long neck but not in a zoological form or precision of the length of the neck.

Then there was The Revolver by Derek Pell which he had something similar about a gun being held by an individual and asking the question of where that individual purchased the weapon from. Although, his story gives you 8 different transformations of the same text but using different ideas. An example of would be in his first writing, he talked about committing a violation of a law carrying a weapon consisting of a metal tube in which projectile is discharged by an explosion. Then he asked about the location of the purchase and the other individual said that it was from a city in north
Texas with the population of 277,000 people. Then I look at writing number 3 which talks about the same idea but different wording. For example, he claimed carrying a THING by means of which something is done… something can be done by having a gun. The he talks about resistance of an attack and how a shot if fired with an explosive force. When it comes to the location of the purchase, he mansions a concentration of houses and buildings larger than a village but smaller than a city. In his first writing, he said that he purchased it in a city north of
Texas. In his 3rd writing, he said that he purchased it from a location smaller than a city but bigger than a village then talks a bout how that place is established a business and or military organization. The idea is pretty much taking a small or large piece of writing and by using the same information provided; you can change the idea of that individual, the item or items, and the location. Different views were I think the idea of both stories was the goal.

XBOX 360 vs. PS3…the WAR is on

Ahh yes, the good old war between video game systems. This is like a never ending freaking cycle. It makes you want to take a Tylenol or better yet Motrin (for me at least). Well, being an Xbox 360 owner, I think I’ve got my money’s worth. It’s got everything I pretty much need….pretty much what every die hard video game freak needs and wants. The Playstation 3 (PS3) is also a good system, but a little more expensive than the Xbox. PS3 has 2 versions, a 20GB and a 60GB and come with a built in HDMI….remember what that is? Look at the post below and you’ll know. But ill just tell you anyways, it stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. Through this connection, you can play and watch movies in full high def view which is 1080p. The downside though to PS3 is that it DOES NOT COME WITH AN HDMI CABLE….AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH….WHY, WHY?? Yea I know it sucks so you pretty much you gotta spend an extra 50 to 100 bucks on a cable. Oh and the price for PS3 is $499 for the 20GB and $599 the 60GB. Thanks Sony, that’s just the kind of prices we look for in a crappy economy. One good thing about it is that it’s got a BluRay DVD player…again that’s mentioned in my other post. But you can’t take full advantage of it with an HDMI cable and an HDTV….Cha Chingggg…and there go’s your life savings…no I’m just kidding. As for the Xbox, it comes in 3 versions; Core system which comes with only a wired controller, a Premium system which comes with one wireless controller, a 20GB hard drive, and a headset for Xbox live, and then there is the Xbox Elite system, which is the mother load. That one comes with a wireless controller, a whopping 120GB hard drive, and an HDMI cable…yes that’s right the people at Microsoft are not cheap a$#’s. And it’s in Black, compared to the other 2 systems which are white. I personally like the black one because it goes with my home theatre system. I like the Xbox more because it’s got A LOT of game selections, and I mean a lot, and it weighs less too. It also has a lot of different accessories which is pretty cool. Both systems are capable of displaying at 1080p which is the highest resolution available on market….unless you got a lot of $$$ to burn and in that case you can get the 1090p which isn’t available to anyone….I think it’s only like for commercial usage because it’s very pricey. I always go to Best Buy to see what’s new and I rarely see someone buying a PS3 because it’s so expensive. Plus its online system is crap compared to the Xbox Live. You can trash talk people from around the world and not worry about getting shot, you can talk to your friends and chat, you can even do video chat too, and you can use the Xbox 360 webcam to take a picture of your face and place it on a character on a game…how sweet is that. It’s like you’re James Bond trying to rescue the girl. I looked at the PS3 titles and nothing really interested me all that much. I’ve even asked people who own it and they don’t really like it all that much anymore. I guess it wasn’t what they expected. I think the only reason why people bought it was because of the BluRay DVD player. I mean a normal BluRay DVD player will run you about 700 to a grand where you can get a PS3 and get it for only 500. Sony needs to step it up a little bit and also improve their online system. I just don’t think it will be as good as the Xbox Live. What’s nice about the Xbox 360 is that you can integrate it with your laptop or home computer and enjoy photos, videos, watch TV, listen to music, and even surf the web. I think that’s another reason why Xbox 360 is in the lead. I can sit here and tell you all about the Xbox 360 features and what you do, but you’ll be sitting here forever. For example, you can now download FULL LENGTH movies from all different types of genres, and some are in HD format. You can even download TV shows and clips and a lot of other cool stuff. If you guys get one, you’ll know what I’m talking about. One time I was playing a basketball game online and the person I was talking to was in his 60’s and was trash talking with me… I was like oh lord the baby bombers are taking over the Xbox world.

HD DVD and BluRay….which is better

So I guess everyone is looking into getting the next level of DVD players that are out on the market…BluRay and HD DVD. I was curious about how they work and how much they cost and let me tell you something, they are not cheap!! A basic HD DVD player will put a nice $500 dent on your wallet. I think that’s nuts. You think that’s high? How about $1000 for an entry level BluRay DVD player by Sony and Samsung. I think that’s ridicules to spend that kind of money on a piece of technology that will be replaced in about 4 to 7 years. LG decided to come out with a DVD player that has both formats which I think is cool, but it did get some bad reviews about sound, and other complications. The price of one of those is $1200. Give me a break!! They show all kinds of advertisements to show you how great they are and how they work and don’t get me wrong the picture is amazing! HD DVD and BluRay promise to give you six times more resolution than the normal DVD. Lately there has been a war between BluRay and HD DVD. Some movie studios want this type, some prefer the other type, and the reason why is because producing movies on those DVD formats is really expensive. If you visit your local Best Buy orCircuit
City, you’ll notice the large selection of HD DVD and BluRay movies that are currently out. When it comes to HD DVD movies, I didn’t really notice a big price difference with normal DVD. But there is a difference between the normal DVD and BluRay…some up to $20 difference. I compared HD DVD and BluRay and I didn’t really see that big of a difference. The reason why BluRay is more expensive is because the DVD itself has more capacity…up to 50GB which is a lot of space, compared to the HD DVD which holds up to 23GB. Keep in mind though this kind of technology will allow you to do more than just watch a movie. More features can be stored, the ability to support full 7.1 surround sound compared to 5.1. The downfall of this technology requires the next level of wiring, so guess what, be ready to dash out another $50 to $100 on an HDMI cable. HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. Rumor has it that HDMI cables will give you amazing picture and sound compared to Component cables (Red, Blue, and Green). Plus, HDMI is only one cable, which means you don’t need separate cables for audio because its all built in. Some say there is no great difference between the two cables, some say you should get HDMI if you want to take full advantage of the HD content. To me, there is no difference. The highest level of HD resolution right now is 1080p… (p) stands for Progressive which gives you a sharper clearer picture. Then there is 1080i…. (i) stands for Interlaced. Take a picture and cut it into 1080 lines. Then put the even ones together, after half a second, put the odd ones together. This will give you a less sharp image but will still have the HD look. I can go on and on about the different levels but im sure you don’t want to read forever. If you buy an HD DVD or BluRay player and an HDMI cable, guess what, you’re going to need a HDTV. Those come in different names and sizes, the biggest one being Samsung which is a 109” Plasma which is about $100,000. Yes that’s right, 100 Grand for a TV. I can buy me a house with that for crying out loud. If you’re planning on going HD, I’d wait a little bit more because prices are starting to go down which is good. I currently have an Xbox 360 and you can buy an optional HD DVD player for $200 which I think is more reasonable. I tried it out and it looks great. Saved myself $300. I don’t really need the best thing to enjoy movies, but hey it would be nice to have that kind of technology. I recommend waiting until Christmas time. Prices will be very low. Happy Shopping!

Intertextuality

As I began to read and understand the first couple paragraphs, I start to be in agreement with what has been written in these book pages. It is in fact true, as the book talks about writings that are fashioned from other writings, or writings that are formed from readings that someone performed. I merely agree with this factor. Things that are already written can be reworded and written in different ways. For instance I can read a news article and use the information from the news article in my thesis that I am typing for a class, however I reword it and so that creates new writing, which originated from me. It is also accurate that students my age experience anxiety when it comes to writing something that is original for the reason that it is not an easy task. But I think that depends on what type of piece of writing you are trying to create. As they continue talking more and more about Intertextuality, it talks about how further developments of communication is created from those who share writings, and jokes. From those, a relationship is found, and from that relationship, one can speak about a certain piece or literature that someone else wrote and try to prove and opposite point. Things like that create a discussion and or a debate, which causes two or more people to throw ideas at each other and different feelings about not only the writings, but that person as well. Another great way that intertextuality is found is on bumper stickers found on vehicles. I look at bumper stickers all the time when I drive and as I look at the writing, I begin to think about rethink and come up with my own mental note or mental writing about that bumper sticker and give a feedback. That is pretty much creating something fresh such as an idea or a statement from something that previously existed. Moreover, making minimal change in writing to have a maximum outcome, like mentioned in the book, “ BEAR ARMS” and “ARM BEARS”, I think that’s kind of funny to see a bear with a weapon, but I’m sure that others won’t approve of that and may think that I’m nuts. As long as the bear is not anywhere near me, I’ll be fine! As I look at the writings in the handbook that talk about Déjà vu (awesome movie), I can see that the person who wrote the poem used intertextuality by looking at what he first wrote, and then create another piece that will have great flow or a good strong connection with the first part. I do the same when I write poems. I look at what I wrote in the first part of the poem, and then come up with something that will strongly relate to the first part, therefore, I create another writing, which came from the first. Its kind like a never ending cycle of writing.
